Half of Oslo residents agree: Too much alcohol is consumed around children during Christmas

Alcohol consumed in front of children during christmas

18.12.2024 - A new survey conducted by Ipsos on behalf of Av-og-til reveals that 50% of Oslo residents believe too much alcohol is consumed during Christmas when children are present. The alcohol awareness organization Av-og-til is calling on individuals to take action if they witness intoxicated adults in the company of children over the festive period.

"If you're concerned about a child, it's important to take responsibility. Even small actions can make a big difference. It might be as simple as showing the child that you're a reliable adult or serving coffee to help tone down alcohol consumption during dinner," says Ragnhild Kaski, secretary general of Av-og-til.

Every year, Av-og-til receives personal stories from people who grew up with parents who drank excessively. Many share that the most painful aspect was that no other adults dared to intervene.

"It’s especially hurtful to know that other adults noticed but chose to look the other way," Kaski explains.

"Even though it can be challenging to know what to do, it’s crucial to act on that gut feeling. The well-being of children must take priority over our own discomfort," she advises.

Av-og-til has created a list of tips for what to do if you’re worried about a child during Christmas:

How you can help:

  • If appropriate, reach out to the child and show that you see what’s happening.

  • Try to calmly talk to the parents or other adults. Sometimes it’s better to wait until they are sober. Share what you’ve observed and express your concerns.

  • Talk to other adults. Do they see the same thing you do? What can you do together to address the situation?

  • Consider ways to protect the child as much as possible. Invite them to participate in family activities like baking, a game night, or a skiing trip.

  • If you’re deeply concerned, contact the Emergency Hotline for Children and Youth at 116 111. Professional help and advice are available there.
