New report on alcohol and other drugs in Stockholm

09.12.2022 - The percentage of people using drugs is higher among young people and adults in the city of Stockholm compared to the rest of the county and the country. This is according to a new report by CAN (The Swedish Council for Information on Alcohol and Other Drugs) commissioned by the city of Stockholm. The report describes the situation regarding alcohol, drugs, doping, tobacco, and gambling in Stockholm.

The report also shows that alcohol-related deaths and deaths from drug and medication poisoning, which have long been higher in Stockholm than in the rest of the country, are now generally at the same levels as for the country as a whole.

The percentage of intensive and at-risk consumers of alcohol has increased among adults in the city of Stockholm during the period 2012-2019. The increase has been particularly high among women.

Charlotta Rehnman Wigstad is the director of CAN and one of the authors of the report.

"We can see that the percentage of school-aged children who drink alcohol has fallen across the country. The decrease is slightly greater in the city of Stockholm compared to the decrease in the rest of the county and the country," says Charlotta Rehnman Wigstad.

When it comes to daily smokers, the percentage has decreased among adults and young people in Stockholm. However, occasional smoking among adults is more widespread than in the rest of the county and the country.

"The purpose of the report is to provide an overview of the current situation and to relate it to other municipalities in Stockholm county and the country," says Charlotta Rehnman Wigstad.

CAN has produced the report on behalf of the Competence Center for Children and Young People in the city of Stockholm, using a variety of data sources in the compilation.

Elin Sylvan is an investigator focusing on ANDTS prevention at the city of Stockholm's Social Affairs Administration.

"The knowledge constitutes a large part of the situational picture that we used when we developed the new ANDTS program that the social welfare board will be able to take part in after the turn of the year. In a big city like Stockholm, there are many organizations that need knowledge to be able to contribute to the preventive work," says Elin Sylvan.
